Setup

Setup — table

Mighty Basics Replay. This game is from the declarer's view: the opening lead with the King of the Mighty's suit. Trump (giruda) is ♦, contract 15. Mighty is ♠A, and the Friend card is also the Mighty, so P5, who holds it, is my Friend. In the exchange I discarded ♥K, ♥2 and ♥4, leaving me void in ♥. Watch how a single ♠K takes the first trick, and where the empty ♥ suit pays off.

Trick 1

Trick 1 — table

You can't lead trump on the first trick, and I have no non-trump Ace. So I led ♠K instead. The only card that beats it is ♠A, the Mighty, and the Mighty is in my Friend's hand. So the King of the Mighty's suit is a sure winner.

Trick 2

Trick 2 — table

Now the trump drain. With no trump Ace, I led my lowest trump, ♦2. P4's ♦ void showed, and my Friend took it with ♦A.

Trick 3

Trick 3 — table

My Friend kept the trump drain going with ♦9. I took it with the Joker and saved ♦K. With ♦A gone, ♦K is now the boss, and the Joker is powerless on the last trick, so it's better spent here.

Trick 4

Trick 4 — table

I led ♦K, now the boss, and pulled the defenders' last trump, ♦Q. The defenders have no trumps left, so I stop draining here.

Trick 5

Trick 5 — table

I led low with ♠5. The Mighty is in my Friend's hand, so this isn't a Mighty hunt; it hands the lead to the Friend. My Friend took it with the Mighty and was revealed.

Trick 6

Trick 6 — table

My Friend led ♥6, and I ruffed with ♦3, having emptied my ♥. The void I made with my discards kept the lead on our side.

Trick 7

Trick 7 — table

I led ♠9 to draw out ♠Q. Now my ♠10 is the ♠ boss. The ♥Q a defender loaded was ruffed by my Friend and became our point.

Trick 8

Trick 8 — table

My Friend led a low ♣8. With only clubs left it was a losing lead anyway, so P5 played the lowest card instead of a picture card. P4 won with ♣Q, the defenders' first point.

Trick 9

Trick 9 — table

P4 led ♥A, but I have no hearts. My Friend loaded ♣10 in advance, and I ruffed with ♦6.

Trick 10

Trick 10 — table

The last trick. Because I drew out ♠Q on trick 7, my saved ♠10 is the boss. Five point cards came in at once.

Result

Result — table

19:1, a comfortable win over the contract of 15. When the Mighty is on your side, the King of the Mighty's suit is as good as an Ace. That's why you can make the opening lead with confidence even without a non-trump Ace.
