Setup

Setup — table

Mighty Basics Replay. This game is from the Friend's view: loading honors. Trump (giruda) is ♠, contract 13, and P5 is the declarer. Mighty is ♦A, and the Friend card is the Joker, so I, holding the Joker, am the Friend. I hold trumps ♠Q, ♠10, ♠8, ♠2 and ♥K, ♥J, ♥10, with no diamonds at all. Watch which honors I load onto the declarer's winning tricks, and in what order.

Trick 1

Trick 1 — table

The declarer opened with the boss ♥A. I loaded ♥10. Once ♥A is gone, ♥K becomes the boss, so I save the boss and load the non-boss honor first.

Trick 2

Trick 2 — table

The declarer drains trumps with ♠A. I saved the Joker and loaded ♠Q, which was unlikely to win anyway.

Trick 3

Trick 3 — table

The declarer drains again with ♠K. I loaded ♠10 and kept ♠8 and ♠2 as ruffing weapons for later. Now the defenders have no trumps left.

Trick 4

Trick 4 — table

The declarer led a low ♥2 and handed me the lead. I took it with ♥K, now the boss, and picked up ♥Q too. That is the payoff for saving ♥K on the first trick.

Trick 5

Trick 5 — table

Next I led ♥J, also a boss. The defenders had no trumps, so they could not ruff.

Trick 6

Trick 6 — table

I led a low ♣6. The defenders played ♣Q and ♣A, but the declarer, last to play, ruffed with ♠4 and those honors became ours. The declarer's club void was revealed.

Trick 7

Trick 7 — table

I ruffed the declarer's ♦5 with ♠8. Now we both know each other's voids. The declarer is void in clubs, and I am void in diamonds.

Trick 8

Trick 8 — table

This is loading honors at its best. I led an honor, ♣J, into the declarer's void. The defenders had to follow with their last clubs, ♣K and ♣10, and the declarer ruffed to pass the contract.

Trick 9

Trick 9 — table

I took the declarer's last trump with the Joker. The Joker loses its power on the last trick, so now is Joker time.

Trick 10

Trick 10 — table

On the last trick, ♠2, the only trump left, is the boss. The defenders had only diamond honors left and gave them all up, and the declarer's Mighty covered the trick.

Result

Result — table

20:0, a run. Loading the non-boss honors first when following, and leading an honor into a suit your partner will ruff — both are loading honors. You can step through this game yourself in the Basics Replay section of Mighty Korea's school (mightykorea.com).
