Setup

Setup — table

Mighty Basics Replay. This game is from the declarer's view: the discards. Trump (giruda) is ♣, contract 15. P3, holding the Mighty ♠A, is my Friend. In the exchange I discarded three honors: ♥Q, ♠J and ♠10. Honors in the discards count for the declarer's side, so I start 3 points up before playing a card. It also left me void in hearts and spades. In return, my trumps are weak, with ♣J the highest.

Trick 1

Trick 1 — table

On the first trick I led ♦10, and my Friend covered with the Mighty, revealing the Friend. Three honors plus 3 points from the discards: 6:0 after one trick.

Trick 2

Trick 2 — table

My Friend led the boss ♥A. Void in hearts, I loaded ♦Q instead of ruffing.

Trick 3

Trick 3 — table

My Friend helped drain trumps with a lone ♣10. Out came ♣Q, which my trumps could not beat, so I took it with the Joker.

Trick 4

Trick 4 — table

Now I must drain trumps myself, but all my remaining trumps are lower than ♣A and ♣K. Ready to give up a trick, I led ♣8 and drew out ♣K.

Trick 5

Trick 5 — table

I ruffed P5's heart with my lowest trump, ♣2. The only trump left outside was P2's ♣A, but P2 had to follow hearts and could not over-ruff.

Trick 6

Trick 6 — table

I led a low ♣3 again to draw out the last outside trump, ♣A. A weak trump drain only works by giving up two tricks like this. Now ♣J is the trump boss.

Trick 7

Trick 7 — table

I could have ruffed P2's ♠K, but only 1 point was at stake, so I dumped a dead card, ♦9, and kept three trumps.

Trick 8

Trick 8 — table

I ruffed P2's ♠2 with ♣6 to win the lead. The spade void I made with my discards paid off here.

Trick 9

Trick 9 — table

I led ♣J. With no trumps outside, no one can follow. My Friend loaded ♦J.

Trick 10

Trick 10 — table

My last trump, ♣7, brought in ♦A too, making the contract of 15 exactly.

Result

Result — table

15:5, a win right on the contract. Trick points were only 12, so without the 3 points in the discards, the contract would have failed. A lonely honor that is hard to protect becomes your point the moment you discard it. You can step through this game yourself in the Basics Replay section of Mighty Korea's school (mightykorea.com).
